Mentorship Program.

Mentorship Program Details:

The UWIN mentorship program matches selected undergraduate students with a Loomis Sayles mentor to help connect the educational experience to a potential career in investment management by sharing knowledge, experience and career advice. The mentorship program requires a school year commitment of 1-2 hours per month to connect with the mentor, in addition to participation in professional development, networking and educational workshops.

Mentorship Program Prerequisites:

  • Requires a school year commitment of 1-2 hours per month to connect with the mentor. It also includes two full-day workshops and four professional development and educational training sessions
  • Working toward a bachelor’s degree with coursework in finance, business, economics or mathematics, including completion of one accounting course
  • Interest in financial markets
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Attendance at a university or college in the United States
  • Targets undergraduate students in their sophomore and junior years but welcomes students in any undergraduate year

Internship Program

Internship Program Details:

The UWIN internship program is rotational during the school year. Undergraduate students experience two investment or client-facing functions (one per semester) in areas such as fixed income research, portfolio management, equity research, product marketing and client relationship management. The internship program requires a school year commitment of between 12-16 hours per week over two 10-week rotations. Each intern will also be matched with a Loomis Sayles mentor as part of the mentorship program described above. 

Sample projects include:

  • Performing fundamental industry, market, company and valuation analysis
  • Building and updating financial statement models and comparable company spreadsheets
  • Summarizing valuation metrics across industries and holdings of investment teams
  • Generating portfolio optimization recommendations based on in-house fundamental analysts’ and macro team forecasts
  • Performing peer performance analysis
  • Monitoring changes to exchange rate, global bond yields, inflation and growth forecasts

Internship Program Prerequisites:

  • Participation in the mentorship program
  • Requires 12-16 hours per week over two 10-week rotations, one in each semester (or just one semester if studying abroad)
  • Working toward a bachelor’s degree with coursework in business, finance, accounting, data science, mathematics, investing, or economics
  • Completion of one accounting or finance course
  • Interest in financial markets and investing
  • Basic understanding of financial statements and Microsoft Excel
  • Quick learner with attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Individuals on student visas are not eligible for this internship

History of the Program

2014

The critical question emerged: ā€œHow do we address this issue?ā€

Frustration with the lack of diversity in candidate slates for junior positions in credit research prompted the creation of UWIN. This initiative was presented to CEO and President Kevin Charleston, who recognized the necessity for action both within Loomis Sayles and across the industry.

2015

The launch of a new initiative

The UWIN pilot program was founded and successfully launched, featuring participation from 18 students at Bentley University.

2016

UWIN program popularity quickly grows

The program expanded to include both the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston and Bentley University, welcoming 28 students.

2017

Inspire, develop and RECRUIT!

20 students from Bentley University and UMass Boston were recruited, and the first UWIN participant was successfully hired into a full-time position in Loomis Sayles’ Credit Research department. To further enhance the skill set of participants, advanced training sessions in Excel and Bloomberg were implemented. We also introduced a ā€œDay in the Life of a Traderā€ session.

2018

Leveraging the talent pipeline

24 students from Bentley University and UMass Boston were admitted into the program, and the second UWIN participant was successfully hired into a full-time position at Loomis Sayles in the Credit Research department.

2019

Recognizing excellence

39 students from Bentley University and UMass Boston were welcomed into the program. Additionally, Shannon O’Mara, Head of Credit Research, was recognized as a 2019 Women to Watch honoree by InvestmentNews, highlighting her significant contributions, leadership and influence within the financial industry.

2020

Successfully navigates changes during COVID-19

The program expanded to include all colleges and universities in the Boston area and successfully transitioned to a virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic. 39 students were admitted into the program from 14 institutions, including 12 new schools. Additionally, three UWIN participants were hired into full-time roles at Loomis Sayles in Credit Research, Sustainability, and Full Discretion. Additionally, Personal Finance 101 sessions were introduced.

2021

Expanding horizons beyond Boston

36 students from 17 different colleges and universities participated in the program. New institutions included Brandeis University, Bryant University, Connecticut College, Stonehill College, and Suffolk University. Additionally, two UWIN participants were hired into full-time positions at Loomis Sayles in Credit Research and Client Service.

2022

UWIN Instagram account launches

28 students from 13 colleges and universities were admitted into the program. Notably, Harvard University and Tufts University were two newly added institutions. The program also launched an Instagram account, to enhance its outreach and introduced the Inspiring Speaker Series. Additionally, two UWIN participants were hired into full-time roles at Loomis Sayles in Credit Research and Global Bonds.

2023

Loomis Sayles continues to benefit from the UWIN talent pipeline

28 students from 14 colleges and universities participated in the program, which included three newly added institutions: University of Connecticut, the University of New Hampshire, and Williams College. Notably, three UWIN participants were successfully hired into full-time positions at Loomis Sayles in the Associate Development Program (ADP) and Growth Equity Strategies (GES).

2024

Celebrating UWIN’s continuous expansion and success stories

54 students representing 19 colleges and universities were admitted into the program. Notably, new institutions included Gettysburg College, Michigan State University, Middlebury College, The Ohio State University, Providence College, Syracuse University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the University of Saint Andrews. Additionally, three UWIN participants were hired into full-time positions at Loomis Sayles, all within ADP.
